Physiotherapy is a health profession where its practitioners employ any medically proven technique that is effective and “documentation-based” i.e. verifiable results from research and tests. Physiotherapy is a field of study concerned with the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of disease and disability through physical means. It is based upon principles of medical science, and is generally held to be within the sphere of main-stream (conventional rather than alternative) medicine.

Physiotherapy is based on principles of medical science and it is not related to any specific “technique” as typically associated with some of the alternative medicine treatments.

Physiotherapists strive to improve a person’s quality of life. In some jurisdictions, such as the Australian states, physiotherapists enjoy professional autonomy, with the ability to act as primary care providers and to determine – and be responsible for – a patient’s management plan.

The major conditions managed by physiotherapists can be broadly grouped into three categories: musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary and neurological.

  • Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy is the most common physiotherapy practice in the private sector and generally treats aches and pains, like back ache, neck ache, numbness in the arms / legs, knee pain, ankle sprains, etc. This area of physiotherapy also covers the area of Sports, Manipulation and Manual Therapy.
  • Neurological Physiotherapy, which is generally the main area where the public thinks physiotherapy is useful, looks into the rehabilitation of patients with stroke or any other neurological deficits affecting daily function.
  • Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy looks into rehabilitating patients with heart and lung conditions, and the main goal is to improve one?s exercise tolerance. They generally work with post-heart surgery patients, asthmatic patients and/or patients with breathing difficulties. This group of physiotherapists are generally found in hospitals and play an active role in the management of patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
